Health Care Reform, Abortion and You…
This is really irking me, I have to admit. A great victory happened over the weekend in regards to health care reform, at least for those of us that support a public option. It barely passed through the house, but it did, and frankly, nothing like it has ever made it that far in response to health care reform. (Similarly, that holds true for the energy and climate legislation that passed through the house this year also.)
Anyway, I am finding it rather interesting at some of the responses, not from the Right Wingers, as one would expect because their commentary is generally predictable (Where is his birth certificate, no gobernment take over, it will increase our taxes, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit), but from the lefties, those that should be rejoicing.
The shouting is about the Stupak Amendment, which I personally find interesting.
I should start off stating very clearly, I believe 100% in a woman’s right to choose. I have supported that ideology for as long as I can remember, and still believe in that to where I would happily march for women to keep that right. What I don’t understand, however, is why people are pissed off about the Stupak Amendment.
Let’s be clear here, it does NOT prevent abortions from being legal and it does NOT overturn Roe Versus Wade.
All it DOES do is make it so that the public option does not allow for abortions with tax dollars, UNLESS 1.) It’s Rape, 2.) Incest, or 3.) The woman’s life is in danger.
I completely agree with the amendment. Why? Simply because not everyone agrees with the idea to choose, therefore, if we are using tax dollars, I believe it is reasonable to not allow for the insurance to cover what some people may consider morally wrong.
The stupak amendment means that your insurance (If you have the public option) will not pay for an abortion, however, you can still pay for it just fine on your own. Again, it is not going to make it illegal. I also believe you will be able to purchase additional segments of insurance that will cover it, if you so desire.
I thought maybe I was crazy about my logic on this topic, so I talked with my Fiance, who has relatively the same views as me on all of the political issues of our time and she agreed with me on this topic too. Therefore, I know I am not losing my mind and that people are over reacting to a small part of what is otherwise a great step forward for America.

Glad to know we share the same views. I hope that the American women will be able to choose though. In Spain we have a lasting public health care, so I’m sure in America you will find the right path. As regards what’s allowed or not for the insurance, every year there are amendments here, you’ll get used to it! Fortunatelly, there’s been a tendency to be wider-minded so far.

I believe it is morally wrong to give someone an entitlement that they haven’t earned nor deserved. Does this mean that tax dollars should not be used for this?
I am curious why morality is all of the sudden important when it pertains to a woman’s right to choose, but it is irrelevant when discussing property rights and the allocation of scarce resources.
